Key West Mayor Morgan McPherson and City Commissioner Teri Johnston cut the ribbon Friday on the city's new state-of-the-art solid waste transfer station on Rockland Key. They were joined by city managers, staffers of the lead contractor D.N. Higgins, Inc., and representatives of several local contractors who helped get the job completed in just 18 months. The $7.9 million facility will replace the aging Waste to Energy facility on Stock Island. The new facility will be brought on line in phases as computers and other equipment are relocated from the old facility.
