Keys Federal Credit Union's Bob Watson, president and CEO, presented a traditional Naval cutlass to the NAS Key West Senior Sailor of the Year, MA1(AW/SW) Larry Thomas (left). Keys Federal Credit Union was pleased to provide a $250 sponsorship for the military awards banquet, hosted by The Navy League Key West Council & NAS Chief Petty Officers Association, which honored 35 outstanding local military personnel.
The naval cutlass was adopted by the U.S. Navy in approximately 1860. The word "cutlass" is derived from the term "curtal axe", an ancient heavy, but short weapon. The cutlass has the same characteristics and was used in ship-to-shop melee, in boarding parties and to repel boarders.
