Volunteers such as Jerry Leitschuh from the Florida Keys
National Marine Sanctuary's Team O.C.E.A.N. program, along with staff
and friends of Lazy Dog Kayak Tours at Hurricane Hole (MM 4.2, Key
West), turned out on Feb. 21 to rid the mangroves and
shoreline of Cow Key Channel of marine debris. Volunteers in kayaks
removed over 750 pounds of plastic and other trash from less than a mile
of shoreline in under four hours on the water. Sanctuary marine debris
cleanups occur throughout the year, and have successfully removed
thousands of pounds of trash, including miles of derelict trap line and
buoys, from the special waters and mangrove fringed shorelines of the
Keys. For more information on the sanctuary and its programs, visit
