The C-111 and other canals that cut across the southern Everglades divert the freshwater so important to the wildlife that once flourished there. Reducing the drainage capacity of these canals will begin to rejuvenate the wetlands and the fish communities that support wading birds and other top predators. The opportunity to un-do decades of damage caused by draining, ditching and damming the Everglades is always reason to celebrate.

Soldier Ride an honor

The Veterans Council of Monroe County thanks the community of Marathon, the business community and visitors to our city for their donations and supporting the Dockside fundraiser for the Wounded Warriors Soldier Ride. The amount turned over to the Wounded Warrior Project representative at the Disabled American Veterans ceremony was $7,234.

Canal project will undo damage caused to Everglades

History tells us that reforming a country takes a long time

On March 1, 2009, I stepped off a heavily fortified bus called a “rhino” onto a gravel street in Baghdad’s International Zone. I had been recruited weeks before to be an advisor to the government of Iraq’s Ministry of Interior. My position would have me working side by side for the next year with Iraqi Muslims, learning their culture and social mores while helping to build a criminal-intelligence agency to combat terrorism and organized crime.
