Every where I go around town people are talking about the great fishing all over the Upper Keys this past week. It’s all about the dolphin, grouper and tarpon oh my!

The other day I got a note from my science mentor Suzy Roebling about a goliath grouper that was swimming around Molasses Reef in distress. It had been speared. The animal was spotted by one of the glass bottom boats while cruising over the south end of the reef.

Grouper bite is hot coming off the reef

Grouper season kicked off with a pair of 15-pound black grouper, along with flag yellowtails and a big mutton, on the SeaSquared.

Grouper season is off to an excellent start, with plenty of reds, blacks and gags to be had in all venues.

Most of the black grouper are coming off the deeper edge of the reef and wrecks, whereas the gags and reds are being taken on the shallower side to the patches and Hawk Channel. The Gulf is giving up some gags as well.
