Richard Lee Schultz (known as Dick), 76, of Marathon died at his Marathon home on Oct. 25.

Mr. Schultz, owner of Keys Grafix Signs and a watercolor artist, was born on Oct. 25, 1933, in Kankakee, Ill.

After vacationing in the Keys since 1971, he and his family moved to Marathon in 1982. That's when he opened his sign company. He and his wife Betty loved boating and fishing, and Mr. Schultz was involved in several organizations.

He was president of the group that led the incorporation of Marathon, and was known for donating to businesses and organizations. Following Hurricane Georges in 1998, he gave out "open for business" signs that are still visible in town today.

He is survived by his sons Patrick and Eric, and best friend Elizabeth Schultz.

A memorial service is planned for 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Marathon American Legion. His watercolors will be on display.

Memorial donations can be made to the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys.
