Cars roll cross the Jewfish Creek Bridge in Key Largo, Fla., after its dedication on May 22, 2008. The northbound side, on the left in the photo, will close from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for the bridge run on Saturday, Nov. 14.

More than 560 people have signed up for the first Jewfish Creek Bridge Run, set for Saturday, Nov. 14, with participants coming from as far away as Alaska and Germany to race over the newest Keys bridge.

Run organizer Candy Basilius said the field will likely continue to grow up until the last registration day on Friday, Nov. 13.

She said the good turnout shows there is interest in an event like this in Key Largo.

“It took a while to get everybody to understand what kind of event this is and what it can do,” said Basilius, an avid Upper Keys runner who has been planning the race for two years with a friend, Jen Gibson, even before the bridge was complete.

Participants can run or walk a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race, or run in a half-marathon (about 13 miles). Awards will go to the top two men and women in age divisions, as well as the three fastest men and three fastest women overall.

The race takes place from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.. During that time the northbound lane of the bridge will be closed. Traffic will be diverted to County Road 905 and Card Sound Road.

Organizers announced that spectator parking will be accessible before 6:30 a.m. on race day by taking the business exit to Pontunes and Marley’s, which are on the Key Largo side of the bridge. Water, coffee and noise makers will be for sale. After the road closes spectators can exit on the southbound lane.

The entrance fee for the races are $35 for the 5K and $70 for the half-marathon. Registration will take place during the Keys Area Health Education Center Health Expo at the Key Largo Holiday Inn from noon to 9 p.m. on Nov. 13.

Information on the Jewfish Creek Bridge Run is available at www.jewfishcreekbridgerun.com.

Organizers say money raised will benefit local charities, including Jacob’s Aquatic Center, Key Largo Baptist Church, Autism Society of the Keys and the Key Largo YMCA.

Basilius said the event received $15,000 in funding from the Monroe County Tourist Development Council this year, and the TDC has approved $19,000 for next year’s race.

“We’re trying to keep all the business local. Everything came from Key Largo, like the T-shirts, prizes and everything,” Basilius said.
