More than 260 people gathered at the Elk's Lodge in Tavernier on Saturday, Dec. 3, to celebrate the 90th birthday of local historian and archeologist Irving Eyster.
Eyster has lived in the Upper Keys for nearly 60 years and has chronicled some of the most detailed records of well-known Keys people, places and events. He is often credited for compiling the most complete history of Indian Key, which was one of the first Upper Keys settlements and once the Dade County seat.
The Matecumbe Historical Trust, of which Eyster has long served as president, also used the event to raise awareness and funds to construct a Keys history museum in Islamorada. The Museum is slated to carry Eyster's name.
