Are you for R4? Green Living & Energy Education sure hopes so.

R4 stands for Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot (compost), and GLEE is holding four fairs throughout the Keys to focus on R4 that will also feature other aspects of sustainable island living.

The first fair is from 9 a.m. to noon at the Big Pine Academy, mile marker 30.2 oceanside, next to the flea market, on Saturday. The three-hour event offers a little something for just about everyone.

  • Learn something: Need a refresher on what you can recycle in the Keys? The education booth will break it down for you. The folks in charge of recycling in the Keys will be on hand for any questions or suggestions.

Gardening expert Kim Gabel will show off her garbage-munching worms and explain how compost works. And master gardeners will be on hand to diagnose disease or identify insects on your favorite plants.

  • Have fun: Kids can make their own green art, take part in a scavenger hunt (for adults, too), touch some marine life and check out Coca-Cola's hybrid delivery truck.

  • Snack: The academy is having a bake sale and Coke is offering free drinks.

  • Get creative: Local art made from natural materials and recycled items will be for sale.

  • Cool off: Check out short films in the comfort of an air-conditioned classroom.

  • Buy something: A wide variety of products and services are up for bid in the silent auction. Rain barrels -- assembled or not -- will be available. An Earth Machine household-sized composter will be raffled off. And there will be a few vendors on hand with green products.

  • Swap something: If you have a small household item you no longer need, drop it off at the Take It or Leave It booth and perhaps swap it for something more useful. (Small appliances are OK as long as they work.)

  • Take home: A free recycling bin (limited number available).

The remaining three R4 fairs are:

  • Noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 14 at Key West High School, 2100 Flagler Ave.

  • 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Key Largo Community Park, mile marker 99.6 oceanside (turn off U.S. 1).

  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Marathon Community Park, mile marker 49 oceanside.
