Residents will be able to safely dispose of electronic items on Saturday, July 11.
A recycling truck from SIR International of Miami will be at the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce parking lot from 1-4 p.m.
People can recycle old computers, monitors, keyboards, TVs, cell phones and all other electronics. The truck will be parked from 9 a.m. to noon at the former Gary’s Pub, 5271 Overseas Hwy.
The recycling is sponsored by Green Living and Energy Education (GLEE). A GLEE announcement says that electronic waste has become a serious problem because items can leak hazardous chemicals such as lead, mercury, and brominated flame retardants into landfills.
Some of that material finds its way into the water supply and the ocean, affecting the health of nearby communities and aquatic life, GLEE says.
The company collecting the items, SIR International, removes much of the hazardous internal components and sells it to companies that reuse the materials in new electronic devices.
GLEE urges Keys residents to donate working computers, TVs and cell phones to local non-profits and to bring only broken or non-functioning electronics to the e-waste donation day.
