Slaton sent packing, Jones re-elected to Circuit Court bench

August 26, 2014

Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Tegan Slaton, battling health problems and twice removed from the bench while in the middle of hearing evidence and testimony since June, was ousted Tuesday in the nonpartisan Group 4 election.

Key West attorney Bonnie Helms and Key Largo attorney Jack Bridges will go to a runoff on Nov. 4 to replace Slaton, who served one six-year term.

Helms received 46.26 percent of the vote (5,887 votes), Bridges 30.67 percent (3,903) and Slaton 23.07 percent (2,936). Judges run nonpartisan.

In the Group 1 race, incumbent Mark Jones, first elected in 1996, defeated Key West attorney Donald Barrett, 63.93 percent (8,113) to 36.07 percent (4,577).

Jones and the winner of the Group 4 runoff will be sworn in in January.
