Upper Keys pet owners have a new place to get their furry friends groomed.

Ana Gonzalez recently opened The Ruff Spot Pet Grooming & Market in the pink cottage in Key Largo’s median at mile marker 99.3.

Besides grooming, the shop offers premium pet food, treats and supplies.

Gonzalez, a former Miami-Dade County elementary school teacher and 1994 Florida International University grad, has been a pet groomer since graduating top of her class from the Florida Institute of Animal Arts in Winter Park in 2011.

“I have always had an affinity and love for all animals,” Gonzalez said. “My house has never been one without the company of dogs and cats -- and at one point, horses and chickens also.”

Gonzalez, who is bilingual, worked at chain establishments like PetSmart in Oviedo, as well as smaller grooming businesses. She had her own business, Throw Me A Bone Grooming in Winter Springs, before moving to the Keys last year with her husband, their four daughters and their three dogs and one cat.

Services at The Ruff Spot include full grooms ($45 for small dogs up to 26 pounds, $50 for medium dogs up to 35 pounds and $55 for larger dogs); “puppy trims” for $18 and $60 full grooms for cats.

First-time customers will receive a 10-percent discount on their pet’s first groom.

Call The Ruff Spot at (305) 741-7646, or go to www.theruffspot.com for more information.
