Key West police: Marathon man admits taking photos of naked 4-year-old

June 14, 2014

A 44-year-old Marathon man remained in the Monroe County Detention Center Friday in lieu of $35,000 bond following his Tuesday arrest on a felony charge of video voyeurism.

Jeffrey Burkhalter -- who has an extensive Keys rap sheet -- allegedly took photos of a naked 4-year-old boy. He was arrested after he lost his phone, someone found it at Walgreens in North Roosevelt Boulevard in Key West and turned it into city police.

The man who found the Samsung smart phone tried to contact the owner but, in doing so, reportedly found on it the photographs of the child -- and photos of other nude children.

Police obtained a search warrant for the phone and had a forensic analysis done by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Police say from May 9 to May 31, Burkhalter was "actively viewing photos/videos of prepubescent children on known picture-sharing websites."

Based on the location some of the pictures were taken, police were able to contact the father of the 4-year-old. The man told police he doesn't know Burkhalter, an arrest affidavit says.

After being arrested, Burkhalter admitted taking the photos and said he had downloaded other photos of nude children, the affidavit says.

Burkhalter has an extensive arrest record in Monroe County dating back to a fraud charge in 2005. He has also been arrested for marijuana, cocaine other drug possession charges; driving with a suspended license; theft; and multiple probation violations or failing to appear for court dates.
