A new physician has joined Dr. Bernard Ginsberg’s A.S.A.P. Urgent Care Clinic staff in Tavernier.
Dr. Miguel Diaz, 37, comes to the clinic after serving eight years in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman with deployments to the Persian Gulf, several years as an emergency medical technician and as an emergency room nurse at Homestead Hospital. Diaz holds a nursing degree from Jacksonville University.
He went on to graduate with a medical degree from the UNIBE School of Medicine in the Dominican Republic. He is finishing the last 12 months of a 36-month residency at a hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He then plans to become a full-time member of Ginsberg’s team.
“I’m easing my way into the Keys,” joked Diaz, who has a wife and four children.
He plans to focus on dermatology, gynecology, pediatrics and geriatrics.
Diaz will fill the gap in A.S.A.P.’s staff left after Dr. Joseph Goldberg died in February 2013 at the age of 66.
“We waited a long time before we found the right doctor who would fit in down here,” said Deborah Mealus, the practice’s manager.
Diaz knew Goldberg while the two worked together in the Homestead ER.
“That’s how I knew this was here,” Diaz said, referring to the clinic.
A.S.A.P. focuses on providing health care for locals, especially those without insurance. And Diaz said he hopes to soon expand the practice and move to a larger building so he and Ginsberg can serve more Upper Keys patients.
“It’s cheaper to come see us than it is to go across the street to the hospital emergency room,” Diaz said.
A.S.A.P Urgent Care is located on the ocean side of U.S. 1 at mile marker 91.5. The clinic’s phone number is (305) 852-9300. Diaz and Mealus said walk-ins are welcome.
