An Islamorada man with an unsettling record of driving under the influence was jailed early Thursday -- hours after a court hearing on a previous arrest.

Bruce J. White, 30, remains in the Monroe County Detention Center on new charges of driving under the influence -- apparently his fourth DUI arrest since 2003 -- and fleeing from a law enforcement officer.

White was driving south near mile marker 97 on U.S. 1, going about 15 mph over the 40 mph speed limit in a posted construction zone, around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission report.

White's car was spotted by FWC Officer Mike McKay, working traffic safety near an active roadwork site, FWC information officer Bobby Dube said.

McKay tried to make a traffic stop but White's car, a Saturn, kept going for about a mile. Along the way, White's swerving car struck a number of roadside traffic cones. "The cones went flying," Dube said.

White's car finally stopped about 30 yards from a site where a crew of a half-dozen construction workers were present, according to the FWC.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived and conducted a sobriety test and arrested White on a DUI charge.

In addition to DUI, White was charged with felony DUI as a repeat offender and felony fleeing from an officer.

White reportedly was in court Wednesday to be sentenced from charges stemming from a serious two-car crash near mile marker 87 in 2012.

White additionally was charged with violation of probation with no bond allowed. Other counts, including driving on a suspended license, carry bonds totaling $50,000.
