Navy diver charged with sexual assault in Key West

May 7, 2014

A U.S. Navy diver was arrested on a sexual-assault count early Saturday after a disturbance at a military housing apartment in Key West.

Key West police charged Paul N. Leser, 34, a first-class petty officer, with committing sexual battery on a 20-year-old woman.

According to police, another Navy diver met two women while out on the town. They returned with him to a Truman Annex apartment on Fort Taylor Court.

Leser, currently assigned to a Virginia base and in Key West for training, came over to the apartment. He is accused of forcibly groping the 20-year-old woman, a Key West resident, around 3 a.m.

Police were called when the woman's friend became irate. Other details of the incident were withheld to protect the victim's identity.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service "has been notified and is involved," said Trice Denny, spokesperson for Naval Air Station Key West.

Leser was released on $50,000 bond Sunday afternoon. He enlisted in February 2006.
