Key West police say Texas woman prioritized beer over children

April 12, 2014

A Texas woman was arrested Wednesday in Key West after allegedly kicking her two children out of her vehicle on Duval Street in Old Town.

Suzanne Simon, 38 of Sugarland, Texas, is charged with felony child neglect. Friday, she remained in the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island in lieu of $5,000 bond.

The children, a 12-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl, were handed over to the state's Department of Children and Families.

Key West police responded to the Inn at Key West on North Roosevelt Boulevard around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday where an apparently intoxicated Simon was in the lobby, according to a police report.

The kids, at this point, had been reunited with their mother. But they told Officer Bradley Lariz that "Suzanne wanted more beer and cigarettes and kicked both [children] out of the car, driving away, leaving them," according to the report.

The girl eventually found the car and got back in, while the boy asked two women he met on the street for a ride back to the hotel.

The little girl told Lariz that "Suzanne continued to drive around yelling at her and slapping her on the forehead. Suzanne kicked her out of the car two more times to find beer and she picked a beer up off the sidewalk to give Suzanne."
