Member of Key Largo fire board arrested for battery

March 1, 2014

An elected board member of Key Largo's fire and ambulance district was arrested early Friday on a count of domestic battery.

Jennifer L. Miller, 39, was booked on the misdemeanor at the Plantation Key Detention Center shortly after 3 a.m. She was released on her own recognizance seven hours later.

Miller declined comment.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office arrest report, Miller and a juvenile fell into a heated argument over the youngster's misbehavior. Miller is accused of punching the juvenile in the stomach during the 1:30 a.m. dispute in the parking lot of the Buttonwood Bay condominium, near mile marker 96.

The victim, not identified because of age, was not seriously injured and declined medical treatment.

"Based on the provided statement from [the victim] and the available evidence, I did conclude that a physical altercation had occurred and that Miller was the aggressive party," Deputy Vaughn O'Keefe said in the arrest report.

Miller was elected to the board of the Key Largo Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services District in 2010, and served as chairwoman in 2013.

She previously served on the District 5 Advisory Committee to the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. Self-employed, she currently works with the contractor handling Islamorada's wastewater projects.

It is the second arrest of a Monroe County government official on a domestic battery charge in a week. Peter Rosasco, contracted finance director for the city of Marathon, was charged Feb. 14 after a fight with his wife.
