The second of four races in the 29th annual Schooner Wharf Bar Wrecker's Cup Race Series is set for Feb. 23 in Key West.
The just-for-fun series recalls the tradition of wreckers in the Key West of the 1800s. They would head out to sunken vessels and pick up the cargo, getting a cut of it. In the race series, the destination is Sand Key, about seven miles off Key West.
Racers compete in seven classes: Classic, schooner, multihull, monohull over 40 feet, monohull 30 to 39 feet, monohull 25 to 30 feet, and monohull 24 feet and under. Awards go to those place first, second and third.
Those in the schooner, multihull and classic division head out at 1 p.m. Monohulls over 30 feet leave at 1:05 and monohulls under set sail at 1:10.
The captains meeting is Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Schooner Wharf, 201 William St. Entry fee for each vessel is $30. To find out more, call 292-3302.
