Big Coppitt man busted for running pot grow house

January 4, 2014

A Big Coppitt Key man was jailed Thursday after police reportedly found marijuana plants growing in his trailer.

Michael Davis, 67, was arrested on charges of producing marijuana, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and tampering with evidence. He was booked into jail.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin says Deputy Matt Dowling was at Davis' Venus Lane trailer responding to a neighbor who called after smelling marijuana coming from the trailer.

"Davis saw the deputy looking at his home," Herrin said, prompting him to "immediately begin picking up marijuana plants which were growing outside and throwing them in the canal behind his home."

Herrin says deputies found inside the trailer a "marijuana growing operation setup, including special lighting, pots, misters and fans." Deputies found 40 plants, she said.

Davis is charged with production of marijuana and evidence tampering, both felonies, then marijuana possession and drug equipment possession, both misdemeanors.

He's being held without bond at the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island.
