Man busted for allegedly going on Keys hotel rampage

December 18, 2013

A late-night, door-kicking rampage at an Islamorada resort Saturday ended with about $1,800 in damages and a Pennsylvania man booked into jail on felony vandalism counts.

John P. Hertzog, 33, of Macungie, Pa., also was arrested by Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies on charges of disorderly intoxication, a misdemeanor.

An arrest report says Hertzog was detained by security guards at the Postcard Inn Resort at Holiday Isle after the suspect pulled a fire alarm and kicked a glass entrance door until its lock broke.

He also is accused of forcibly kicking several hotel-room doors and knocking down a resort guest who objected to having his door bashed open after 1 a.m. Saturday.

"Mr. Hertzog appeared very intoxicated [or] impaired," Deputy Thomas Amador said in his report. "A total of eight doors were found to have shoe prints matching the...suspect's shoe print on them."

"Mr. Hertzog then punched a light fixture, causing it to shatter and fall off of the wall," the report continues.

A list of estimated damages includes $500 to the entrance door; $850 for a hotel room's door, lock and frame; $200 for a broken fire alarm; and $250 for the punched fixture.

The guest knocked to the floor declined to press charges, the report says.

Hertzog was released from the Plantation Key Detention Center later Saturday morning.
