Couple reports burglary, then is arrested for drugs

November 27, 2013

Key West police officers responding to a burglary call say they found marijuana, cocaine and meth in the Flagler Avenue home occupied by the people who reported the break-in.

Jodi Dawson, a 32-year-old restaurant server, was arrested Nov. 24 on cocaine and methamphetamine possession charges.

Her roommate Matthew Hughes, 38, was arrested on two felony cocaine and marijuana charges. Police say he had 70 grams of marijuana and a small amount of cocaine. He also faces five misdemeanors drug paraphernalia charges. Police say he had storage containers, a grinder and pipe.

Police say they received a report of a burglary in progress at 6:48 p.m. Some officers entered the house and others searched neighboring yards, according to five incident and supplemental reports.

No burglars were found but police said two handguns were stolen -- a .22-caliber Ruger pistol and a Kahr P380.

Whoever broke in "appeared to be familiar with the three pit bulls that were on the property," a report says.

When police initially went into the house looking for the burglar, Officer David Hall said in his report that he saw a container of what turned out to be pot and then three more glass jars filled with marijuana for a total of 73 grams. Hughes said the drugs were for his personal use, a report says.

While searching Dawson and Cook's bedroom, police say they found found 1.7 grams of cocaine in a medical kit next to the bed and, in a backpack branded with Pixar's "Monsters University" children's characters, less than a gram of methamphetamine valued at $100.
