Pawned items lead to felonies

November 16, 2013

John Golden faces a slew of felonies.

A Miami man arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing from a friend, writing bad checks and illegally pawning goods he didn't own remained jailed at the Monroe County Detention Center Friday on $45,000 bond.

John Golden, 50, who was arrested in Miami and brought back to the Keys, faces five counts of grand theft, four counts of fraud and two counts of theft.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says Golden bought "a large amount" of fishing equipment from Jig's Bait and Tackle and from Underseas Inc., both on Big Pine Key. He wrote checks for all the goods, then pawned the goods at various pawnshops in the Keys, the agency says.

The owner of one of the pawnshops called the Jig's owner and asked if he was missing any fishing equipment, saying someone had just pawned several fishing-related items -- new and still in the box. The Jig's owner recognized the goods as those he had just sold to Golden and became suspicious, and called the Sheriff's Office.

Detective Diane Mimosa confirmed the checks written to both stores were written on a closed account.

During her investigation, she discovered other items that were pawned by Golden. When she checked, she found they belonged to a Miami man who has a house in the Keys, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said. The man said Golden had helped him move some property from Miami to his house on Little Torch Key and said he gave Golden a key to his house and let him stay there.

While staying there, Herrin said, Golden took his friend's property and pawned it, telling the pawnshop owners he owned the goods.
