Rescuing a boater thrown from a runaway vessel earns Officer Erik Steinmetz (right) of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission the agency's Lifesaving Award, presented by Maj. Alfredo Escanio at a recent staff meeting. The rescue happened in November in Key Largo when Steinmetz saw an unmanned fishing boat turning circles at high speed near a man in the water. He was able to get into an FWC boat and foul the prop with a rope, stopping the boat.
