Still a youngster, a strapping juvenile pelican is being treated by staff at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center in Tavernier. A boater found the pelican, out of its nest and apparently abandoned, off Islamorada in mid-January. About four weeks old, the bird was too young to survive on its own and the nest could not be found. An exam by bird center staff showed the seabird was underweight and needed treatment for parasites. The youngster is expected to recover.
