If we ever expect to get a handle on runaway greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, we're going to have to wake up and smell the beef. Creating one pound of beef produces nearly 15 pounds of carbon dioxide. A pound of soybeans produces only one quarter of a pound of CO2. That's 60:1.

This past winter brought us record snowstorms and floods, continuing collapse of the housing market, and partisan paralysis in Washington. I really look forward to today, the first day of spring, balmy weather, blooming flowers, and the Great American Meatout.

The bone-marrow donor awareness day for Katja McCollum was a major success. A special thanks to everyone who came out to support Katja and Jimmy and who was able to donate. We had 11 people sign up to be organ donors, 24 units of blood were collected, and 54 individuals were signed up to be on the bone-marrow registry, with many more willing to do so but not eligible.

While I am late writing this letter to the Keynoter, I feel compelled to do so, simply to express my gratitude to Fishermen's Hospital.

I, along with aunts Angela Davis and Ora Greene, would like to thank the staff of Fishermen's Hospital for doing such a beautiful job of delivering my granddaughter's first baby. They were great. Two thumbs up.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR | The Reporter
Candidate’s offers congratulations, and appreciation
To the Editor: First, I would like to congratulate Bob Johnson on his narrow 42 vote victory over me. He ran a good race and had the votes when it counted. There were 36 percent of the registered voters that decided who would represent Islamorada for the next two years. I want to thank you for taking time to exercise your right to vote. In Iraq, people have to put themselves in harm’s way to vote. We are very privileged to vote without fear.

Don't cut any more library funding
I stop by our public library at least twice a week. I see a lively, friendly resource for many people: Parents and children sharing the joy of learning with free books and videos, the unemployed working on resumes and getting contact information for jobs and working on job skills, locals who don't have a functioning computer or broadband looking up Web sites, people tutoring people, and the many, many community groups that use the meeting room. Hundreds of questions are answered every day and the first open day after a holiday weekend will find 500 people stopping in for one reason or another.

Thanks for support
Winning a Village Council election by a razor-thin margin is indeed a humbling experience, as it means about half the voters preferred the other guy, or gal in my case. And oddly enough, I found myself admiring so many of the qualities of Deb Gillis throughout this campaign. She is likable, effective, articulate and knowledgeable while excelling in people skills. I have learned from her and would humbly request Deb's help in moving forward in a slightly different direction for a better Islamorada.

Let's work together
My family and I would like to thank everyone who supported me and helped me get elected to the Islamorada Village Council. Now we have a huge job ahead of us, with decisions to be made that will affect the way we live here in the Florida Keys for generations to come.

Seafood Fest a hit
I would like to express my congratulations to both the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce and the Organized Fishermen of Florida for another successful seafood festival. The community had a great time and several nonprofits were able to raise additional funds to support their causes.
