I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make the Stanley Switlik Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization's annual Halloween carnival a success. Whether you volunteered your time in a booth, sold tickets, built or took down the carnival games, decorated, manned the grill, sat in the dunk tank, donated for our silent auction, baked for our cakewalk or cleaned up, we couldn't have done it without you.

EDITOR: Grace Jones Daycare recently partnered with BB&T Bank in Marathon to paint its playground fence. The Marathon office -- Cathy Cone, Mollie Grostephon, Randy Alfaro, Carla Tabag and Christina Gonzalez -- all volunteered their time over the course of three days to spruce up our center. We thank BB&T Bank for also providing the paint and all of the supplies needed to complete this project.

EDITOR: We wish to thank the entire Keys community for the fantastic support and interest given to our month-long series of events to raise cancer awareness. The interaction of area physicians, agencies and health-care providers with our guests actually led to several women getting screened for the first time.

EDITOR: I have lived and worked in the Keys for the past 35 years. When I first came to Keys R.V. in Marathon, it was mostly a winter haven for our northern friends, and there were very few full-time residents. Over the years, things began to change. The older part-time residents moved on and the younger year 'round residents moved in, finding it an economical and convenient place to live.

In 1995, when I was the new Key West city attorney, Duck Tours sued the city for allegedly allowing Historic Tours of America a sightseeing monopoly, so I asked the City Commission in an executive session for instruction. Only one misreported phrase, rather than the entire transcript of that 1995 session, was shown to the jury in the 2005 Ducks trial, and I've been maligned by the constant repetition of the phrase ever since.

The Montessori Children's School of Key West would like to thank all the parent volunteers who helped make our recent fundraisers not only possible, but huge successes, as well. These were the pre-Goombay dock party aboard a Sebago catamaran, the Fantasy Fest liquor booth on Duval Street and the Children's Day food booth at Bayview Park.

Well, the tax bills have gone out and the comments are flying. "How much did yours go up?" is the frequent refrain. In a short period of time, it's a little obvious that we are paying substantially more for just "being here."
