It was no accident that the Key West High School wrestling team looked in mid-season form at Thursday's pre-season meet at Chaminade-Madonna High in Hollywood.

Many of the Conchs wrestled over the summer with the Key West Police Athletic League Wrestling Club, said coach Chaz Jimenez, who, in his debut as coach, saw his team defeat Westminster Christian, 42-36, Chaminade, 66-11, and Cooper City, 48-36.

"We started out slow, but in the second match against Chaminade we started wrestling really well," Jimenez said.

Three Conchs won all three of their matches -- Lou Wada (145 pounds), Tim Czernik (189) and Randy Cook-McPhee (119).

Sophomore Max Llama, at 125 pounds, was 2-0, as was 140-pound Alex Hernandez. Austin Cerkleski (135) and Casey Park (130) were both 2-1.

"I thought that we could win all three dual meets," Jimenez said. "I wanted to see where our young guys were at."

The young guys did well, particularly Cook-McPhee, a freshman transfer from Illinois, and Cerkleski, a sophomore wrestling for the first time.

Key West will open the regular season a week from today at Naples.
