Three games into the season, the Key West High School girls soccer team has yet to score a goal.

The Conchs (0-3) were shut out again when they lost, 3-0, to University in an early-afternoon wind-blown home game Saturday that attracted about 50 fans to the field behind the high school.

"We have potential scorers, so it's amazing that we haven't scored," said coach Scott Paul, who, like his players, was decked out in a white uniform shirt and red shorts.

Playing without two injured starters, Key West had to play without substitutes against a team from Fort Lauderdale that liked to run.

While the Conchs had problems getting off shots, University didn't. Katie Sadeghi scored twice against junior keeper Jess Bodmer -- the first on a penalty kick, the second on a rebound off her own shot -- to give the Suns a 2-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Bodmer became more upset as the Suns kept breaking through the defense.

"Are you guys serious? -- Please, mark up," she said at one point. But things got better when she went out to block a shot and collided with the charging player, knocking her gasping to the ground. "It was a big highlight," Bodmer said.

But moments later she had to disconsolately fish the ball from the back of the net after Lisa Rennison beat her from 10 yards out for the Suns' final goal.

Key West tried its best to score -- even to where Raquel Schonek flung herself toward the goal trying to head the ball in while on the ground after being after tripped.

"It can't get worse," Bodmer said. "But I'm an optimistic person and I'm sure we'll push through this. It just will take sheer effort."

As for the coaches, University's Evan Grosz said, "I'm proud of how our girls moved the ball. We knew we'd get a physical game from Key West."

"The learning continues on many levels," said Paul, whose team plays its District 16-4A opener at 3 p.m. Thursday at Mater Academy. "We're building our team and our personality."
