Chaz Jimenez will make his debut as Key West High School wrestling coach Thursday when the Conchs travel to Hollywood for a preseason meet with Chaminade-Madonna, Westminster Academy and Cooper City.
An economics teacher, the 26-year-old, 285-pound Jimenez was an assistant under John Moeller for five years and has been with the program since its inception 10 years ago. In 2001, he was a state heavyweight runner-up for the Conchs.
He will take over a sophomore-laden team that is expected to be talented and hard-working. "Potentially, we have six or seven guys who could go to the state tournament," he said.
Among those expected to stand out is 119-pound Max Llama, who was impressive last season as a freshman.
Like some of his teammates, who are members of the Key West Police Athletic League Wrestling Club, Llama hasn't stopped wrestling since the end of last season. The club had 10 off-season tournaments.
"I'll be much better," Llama said. "I'll be a lot stronger and have a lot more endurance."
Veterans on the roster include Lou Wada (140 pounds), Cody Van Buren (135) and Dylan Barber (135), who missed last season because of injury. Joining the team after the football season will be senior heavyweight Paul Leatherwood, Fyrland Sanon and Jerry Regis.
Randy McPhee, a 112-pound transfer, was second in the Illinois middle-school state tournament last season, Jimenez said.
Jimenez is clearly in his element in the Conchs' dingy practice room, an old auto-body shop that has a red-and-gray mat. "I love the smell of this place," he said.
John Moeller, though, is still around. Before a recent practice, he was the loan figure in the room, mopping the mat. "I'm just the bus driver now," he said with a laugh.
Moeller will have to do a lot of driving. The Conchs have only one home meet, the Key West Duals on Dec. 5.
