The Marathon High School volleyball team's season ended Tuesday with an opening-round district playoff loss to Palmer Trinity School, 25-4, 25-8 and 25-8.

Coach Anthony Green said he knew the Dolphins faced a tough challenge, having lost to the Falcons twice during the regular season.

"The girls were OK for the most part. We realized that it would be a very, very difficult game because this team has really beat us the last two times we played them," Green said. "They went out there and tried their best."

That wasn't quite good enough to defeat the Falcons, led by last year's Miami Herald player of the year, Paulina Prieto. The sophomore had 13 kills and three blocks in the straight-set win.

"She's very tall and athletic and she hits hard. She's also a very creative player," Green said of Prieto. "She's on her way to a college to play volleyball. I hope Marathon will be able to get to that level in the future."

Green said Annabelle Walker played well at the net for the Dolphins, while senior Patricia Bologna passed and served well.

"Patricia played a very good game from start to finish. That helped us to get some points in the second and third game," Green said.

Marathon finished the season 9-10 and improved from a sixth seed last year to a third seed in this year's district tournament.

Green said he looks forward to seeing what junior varsity players will step up to fill the void left by graduating seniors Shelby Kuck, Latasha Coleman, Ashley Hooper, Emily Perez and Bologna.
